Instead of re-paving roads and repairing bridges, which are the politically safe expenditures, but won't help America compete in the coming century, how about an infrastructure plan to launch a gazillion startups? Instead of finding jobs for the chronically unemployed in yesterday's industries, why not get many of them to start their own businesses?
- Partner with Google to fund fiber to not some but all major cities and towns in the country.
- Provide matching funds to VC houses, so they could double the number of startups that get funded.
- Provide educational grants to high schools and colleges that teach entrepreneurship and classes on how to run a business.
- Provide bank guarantees so local banks can provide loans to first-time business owners.
